Catalogue Note
This is the composition manuscript where Strauss makes an initial draft of the soaring melody of his song. "Im Sonnenschein is another of those great arches of Straussian melos which...might well have been some discarded extract from one of the operas which were the chief preoccupation during the last decades of his long liife" (Del Mar, iii, 374). This song was published posthumously by Universal-Edition as op.87 no.3 [Trenner no.268; Mueller v Asow WoO.121], together with two other Rückert settings.
