4to (216 x 135mm.), italic text, woodcut Aldine device to title, aa1 and final verso, woodcut diagrams on f.105, f.119, & ff.124-127, contemporary Italian blind-tooled red calf with an outer border of leafy tools and central rope-work decoration, four clasps (two at foredge, one each at head and foot), later pastedowns and flyleaves, a few early annotations, slight staining to title and to heavy deletion on f.227v, lacking clasps at head and foot, spine somewhat worn, a few wormholes

Catalogue Note

Cato the Elder's treatise on agriculture (c. 160 BC) is the oldest surviving work of Latin prose. The greater part of the volume (ff. 69-236) contains Lucius Columella's important De re rustica of the first century AD.
