Super-Chancery folio (310 x 204mm.), 76 leaves (of 77, without final blank), [110 210 (+10*) 3-410 58 6-710 88], 35 lines, gothic type, 4- to 8-line initials in red, one with blue penwork decoration, later rubrication in red in period style and red ruling on first 21 leaves, first leaf with decorative coloured border and inhabited initial, nineteenth-century calf by J. Mackenzie & Son, spine gilt in compartments with morocco lettering-pieces, red edges, first few leaves slightly soiled

Catalogue Note

First edition of St Ambrose's didactic text on the six days of Creation, written in the fourth century. Schüssler printed in Augsburg from 1470 to 1473, and his single typeface was acquired from Günther Zainer, Augsburg's first printer. He sold his presses to the monastery of SS. Ulrich and Afra but continued to work in the trade as a bookdealer and binder.
