Anju Dodiya

Anju Dodiya has mastered the traditional technique of watercolour to portray personal and contemporary concerns. Using delicate washes of colour and dark lyrical lines inspired by Japanese ukiyo-e prints, Dodiya often represents herself, juxtaposed with references to art historical and literary sources. This work is a monumental self-portrait, reminiscent of the portrait busts of the Renaissance period, with their 3/4 view profile. Rendered against a stained background often visible in her works. Roundels circulate her head, accumulating in her brain where they house the thoughts and desires that occupy her mind.
