Catalogue Note
This later work from Raza's oeuvre embodies all the qualities that span his career. Raza has successfully combined his awareness of nature and the classical arts of India with the modern art practices acquired during his time in France and America. This abstract work demonstrates Raza's absorption of the French and Indian countryside, the elements of nature parred down to the essential and rendered with a flat and pure palette that acknowledges the simplicity and beauty of the Indian miniature tradition. Unusual to the composition is the red Bindu contrasted with the right third of the work. "Raza remains characterized by the crossbreeding of the modernity of Europe and America and the spirituality of India. His evolution can be observed in the successive stages that structured his life: at every moment of his thought process life, nature and their mysteries have been forever present." (M. Imbert, Raza: An Introduction to His Painting, New Delhi, 2003, p. 54)
