Sohan Qadri (1932-2011)

Sohan Qadri was an artist who was equally engaged with Tantric imagery and modernist minimalism. In this work, this tension can be seen in the relationship between the grid-like forms and the numen within each square formed by the grid. On Qadri, the artist Francis Newton Souza said, “There are artists. There are Tantriks. There are Tantrik artists. As far as I know, there are no Tantrik yogis who are artists. Sohan Qadri is an exception. He is an exceptional artist. He is an accomplished master (guru) in the art of yoga. He is an accomplished master in the art of painting, Tantrik painting” (Partha Mitter, “Per Ardua ad Astra: Sohan Qadri’s Life and Work,” in Sohan Qadri: The Seer Skira, 2011, p. 11).
