Catalogue Note
Shyamal Dutta Ray drew his inspiration from his home city of Calcutta and on his abiding love of music. This is represented in the present work by a wandering musician in front of a classic Bengali townscape. Most commonly known as a watercolorist, this canvas is notable for its medium. Ray was a founding member of the Society of Contemporary Artists, an artist’s collective of the 1960s. He studied at the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Calcutta and exhibited widely throughout his career.
