Catalogue Note

These charming figurative creations are rare, early examples of Maqbool Fida Husain’s work predating the bold modern paintings for which he is best known.  To support his growing family, Husain accepted employment at the Fantasy Toy Company, where he worked for much of the 1940s. Despite having created many toys during this time, works that can be definitively attributed to Husain remain uncommon. These works show Husain’s dexterity in rendering playful, childlike images that also exemplify his prowess as a draughtsman. The oil on woodcut block above is one of the largest painted toys to ever come to the market.
