Catalogue Note

Gogi Saroj Pal is a leading feminist artist known for her mythical imagery as well as subversive representations of gender politics. Her works are also seductive for their primal and sensuous use of color. In the 1980s, she undertook several representations of the theme of Halley’s Comet, as connected to a folkloric story related to her by her family. It was rumored that pregnant women ought to take a special medication when the comet was set to arrive in order to keep them and their babies in good health. This composition is especially poignant as only the woman on the right has a child on her lap, and we are left to wonder about the desires of the other women.
