Catalogue Note

Antonio Trindade was born into a Catholic family in Goa, and moved to Bombay to earn a living when his father died. He studied Western art at the J.J. School of Art in Bombay and became skilled in his use of academic realism to represent women. In the present work, a subtle, diffused light highlights the sensuous quality of this standing nude woman. Though his work and this style was well regarded before Independence, after 1947 it was broadly associated with the British and rejected by those who sought to become the new avant-garde.
