Catalogue Note

May Look Closer Than They Appear – 3 seems to be Joshi’s reaction to the burgeoning prosperity within the metropolises and the attendant urban sprawl as a consequence; where all that glitters is not gold.

The large magnitude of the canvas turns the work into a spectacle, much like Joshi’s installations. Although placid upon first sight, this work hints at a darker message about contemporary consumption and contemporary life in India. 'His subject matter is informed by growing urbanization and the complexity of modern society, the elements that are overlooked during this process, and the harmful consequences possibly caused.' (Günter Oberhollenzer and Anna Szoke (eds.), Chalo India: A New Era of Indian Art, London, 2009, p.104)

Anant Joshi received a B.A. and M.F.A. at Mumbai’s prestigious Sir J. J. School of Art. He then completed a two year residency program at Rijksacademies, Amsterdam. He has been presented with numerous awards and scholarships including the Prix de Rome scholarship, the Bendre Husain Scholarship and the Bombay Art Society Award.
