Catalogue Note

Majestic Landscape is comprised with an array of visual narration. Hendra Gunawan voiced different stories through each of his paintings and as a passionate nationalist he was able to cultivate the spirit he had for Indonesia through his art.

Capturing the essence of the Balinese landscapes, Gunawan seizes the fleeting moments of time, evoking mythical and spiritual themes through his use of bright and intense colours. With the same attention to detail, he depicts women working in the scorching heat, carrying heavy baskets from their harvest they collected earlier in the day.

Hendra Gunawan idealised his country and his endless passion for Indonesian life led to a style of Modern painting which was poetic and fluid, giving this painting a real tranquil quality. Furthermore, this was aided by his use of colours which were saturated, embellishing this painting with different hues of turquoise, blues, greens and pinks producing a lush and lively landscape filled Gunawan’s enduring spirit.
