Catalogue Note

Cheong Soo Pieng did not associate himself with just one particular style of painting, but rather, exposed himself to different genres of art. He skillfully paired influences from both the East and West in his paintings which created a unique and ever changing style of his own, challenging other Modern artists in Southeast Asia at that time.

A Village in China, painted at an early stage of his career was inspired by Xiamen, a city on the Southeast coast of China where Cheong was born and raised. His imaginative use of colour as well as technique breaks through the barriers of the traditional and brings forward something that is visually fresh, yet familiar to us. The red ink bursts with colour, bringing our attention to the boat, the blue and green trees leap out with a sense of motion and excitement. The artist’s vision is instantly brought through the piece by his bold and confident use of colour.  Simultaneously, he is capable of capturing the beauty of the lush yet humble landscapes of the village.
