Catalogue Note
The French aquarellist painter Leo Craste was a member of the Colonial Society of French Artists, and a regular writer and illustrator for many newspapers. He worked for the famous printed periodical, "Bulletin des Amis du Vieux Hue", that discussed the Vietnamese culture, society and history. The publication was only published during the first forty years of the 20th century.
This large-sized watercolor depicts the sampans gathered together on the boat quay of the Chinese arroyo in Saigon, which is now known as Ho Chi Minh City. Leo Craste's harmonious and accurate composition evokes a moment of effervescence, and the daily lives of ordinary people. The painting is of an area that at the time was called "The Pearl of Far East", and is a region that still resonates with viewers today.
