Condition
The lacquer is in good condition overall, as are the panels, which have no ostensible cracks or warping. Indications of light wear and handling around the edges is evident, along with associated gentle scuffs. Under ultraviolet light inspection reveals no evidence of restoration. Unframed.

Catalogue Note
In 1945, due to the outbreak of the war which caused the closing of the "École des Beaux Arts" of Hanoi, the young painter Vo Doan Giap, along with many of his famous fellow students, could not obtain his graduation diploma. Some of the students joined the Resistance forces, while others like Vo artist chose to move to the South to pursue their artistic career. In 1955 thanks to the opening of the Fine Art School of Saigon created and directed by the master Lê Van De, Vo and some of his former classmates from Hanoi were finally able to obtain their diploma after a specialized exam.
The Highland Forest Of Annam, is an extraordinary lacquer painting that has been commissioned to Vo Doan Giap in 1953 to decorate the wall of a French villa in Dalat, a little city situated in the Annamese mountains. Famous for its idyllic scenery, Dalat is surrounded by the biggest hunting territories of Indochina. The depicted painting represents a forest landscape of this region in a naturalistic manner. In the foreground is a group of stags and deer peacefully grazing in this majestic nature.
The classical and complex technique of the lacquer is emphasized with pigments of gold and silver, conveying serenity and the rich environment of Annam. The shadows and shapes of the rocks and the lushness of the vegetation compliments natural’s beauty.
