Condition

The work is in good condition overall, as is the canvas, which is clear and taut. There are indications of light wear and handling on the margins of the canvas, along with associated pin-size holes located on the upper left margin, and a minute paint loss on the upper left corner, all of which are only evident upon close observation. There are also soft craquelures, predominately on the portrait's head and hand (red paint) and lower left register (black paint). Examination under ultraviolet light inspection, there is no evidence of restoration. Framed.

Catalogue Note

“Among all his paintings, it is the self-portraits that most obviously reveal his ever-changing reflections. In the self-portraits he made between 1960 and 1970, the faces are still clearly depicted. Traces of images are still obvious here. The faces emerge from dark tones, bright reds, or gloomy or vicious tones, with highly dynamic lines. They are full of energy; loud with the tunes of the curving lines.”
