Catalogue Note

I Am Beautiful by Lynard Paras depicts a little girl sitting on a bench, set against the backdrop of a blue, cloudy sky. She innocently looks at the viewer, seemingly without a care in the world. She is, as the nursery rhyme describes – “sugar, and spice, and everything nice.”

A closer look however, points to other realities: an apple, a severed heart, a diamond drawn on a sheet of paper, a pink rose, a cardboard house, among other images. The painter has smudged her arms and dress with oil pigments, a spatula, drawings and graffiti.

Amidst recent catastrophes (natural and man-made) in his homeland, the artist highlights the resiliency of his people. Naturally positive in outlook, Filipinos have experienced great difficulties, but have somehow started anew, accepting the inconveniences, ready to face the future.

The child is a metaphor; she represents a fresh start, a willingness to learn and hope. In the course of our lives, when challenges crowd us, or when we make mistakes, the artist reminds us: "after we experience hardships, we learn a lesson – that it is the small stuff that lead us back on the path to rebuilding our lives. The value that we put on the things and people leads us to the correct decision on what really matters in life." In order to know what is truly important, one must be a child again.
