Condition

The illustration of the catalogue is accurate. Good overall condition despite the inevitable scratches and marks throughout due to age and handling. The green patina of the arms of light is partly period. A few flowers are missing. The giliding of the mounts is slightly tarnished as expected. The Blanc de Chine dogs are in good overall condition with some small firing crackles ; the ears, of the mane and the tail have been partly chipped as expected.

Catalogue Note

Directement issus de la mythologie chinoise, les chiens de Fô avaient le pouvoir de chasser les esprits malveillants. Leur apparence fantastique, mi-chien, mi-dragon, mi-lion les rendit particulièrement appréciés en Europe où il furent utlisés par les marchands-merciers pour former candélabres, flambeaux ou encriers.
Une paire de candélabres aux Qilins en blanc de Chine, animal fantastique assez proche combinant les traits du dragon, du lion et du cerf, provenant de la collection Léon Levy fut vendue chez Sotheby's à Paris, le 2 octobre 2008, lot 4.
