Condition
Very good condition overall with minor wear to the surface consistent with age and handling. Very fine and crisp cast with warm brown patina and good chiselling.

Catalogue Note
Le marbre antique de l'Arrotino figurant sur un dessin réalisé par Martin Van Heemskerk à Rome, en 1536, fut acquis par Ferdinand de Médicis en 1578. Foggini réalisa en 1684 une copie en marbre d'après l'Antique pour Versailles qui sera remplacée en 1688 par une fonte des Frères Keller formant pendant avec une Vénus accroupie. Une lettre du directeur de l'Académie française à Rome, de la Teulière, témoigne de l'intérêt particulier que le Roi porte à l'Arrotino et son désir de posséder une version de ce célèbre marbre antique. Ainsi est mentionnée dans l'inventaire de la collection de Louis XIV, sous le n° 14, '...une figure d'un homme agroupy qui aiguise un cousteau, hault de 14 pouces...'. Un autre exemplaire appartient à la collection d'Auguste Le Fort à Dresde, acheté par Raymond Leplat en France, une paire, de taille identique à notre bronze, est conservée à la Wallace collection à Londres (inv.n°S189).
