Condition

Good condition overall with some losses at several places. Left Angel: Two fixing holes visible, one in his right shoulder and one to his back. Joints and fine fissures at several places. One wing reattached. Three fingers of his proper left hand broken. Right Angel: His wings are missing. Index of his proper right hand missing. A few fixing holes visible at several places. Both very finely carved ivories.

Catalogue Note

Ces deux anges décoraient jadis un groupe plus important comme l'indiquent les tenons et mortaises encore visibles sur les bras et les jambes des figures. Originaire du Tirol, ensuite actif à Innsbruck et Munich, Simon Tröger (1683-1768) fut l'un des sculpteurs d'ivoire les plus célèbres associant souvent l'ivoire au bois avec, ici, les yeux incrustés de verre. En effet, les putti ornant L'Enlevement de Proserpine au Bayerisches Nationalmuseum de Munich (inv n° R 4999) ou ceux du Jugement de Salomon (au V. & A. Museum à Londres), réalisés vers 1741 à Munich, sont tout à fait comparables à la paire proposée ici: on retrouve ces visages soigneusement dessinés, aux joues pleines, les boucles de cheveux qui s'enroulent autour des oreilles et la finesse des doigts.
