Condition

Very good condition overall. The arms have been carved separately, joints are visible on both shoulders. Some yellow discolouring to the ivory at several places. A few vertical fissures to his shoulders and legs, consistent with age. Good period frame with some joints visible and some worming. Very attractive piece.

Catalogue Note

Le modelé du corps du Christ, au torse longiligne, et le traitement ondoyant de sa chevelure et de sa barbe résument parfaitement les caractéristiques du crucifix français sous le règne de Louis XIV. Cet ivoire se rapproche notamment du Crucifix en ivoire sculptué de la Sacristie de Savigny dans l'Allier (cf. H.-G. Tardy, op. cit.) et présente également de grandes similitudes stylistiques avec un Christ en croix conservé au musée du Louvre (inv. OA 5358 (cf. P. Malgouyres, op. cit.).
