Catalogue Note

One of Ai Weiwei’s installations for Documenta XII (2007) was comprised of 1001 Qing Dynasty chairs which acted as stations of reflection in and around Kassel, Germany. This particular type of chair bears personal significance to the artist’s childhood, as one of the only objects his family was allowed to keep while be exiled to China’s remote northern regions was a Qing Dynasty Chair.
