Catalogue Note

Slice V (2013) is a work from Auerbach’s Weave series of paintings. For these pieces she takes strips of raw canvas and weaves them over and under onto wooden stretchers, creating various complex patterns she names Slice, Bend, or Ray. As with her Fold works, the tension between two- and three-dimensionality, between order and random effect, are here put into play. The iterations of pattern that result from the intricate weaving process create horizontal, vertical, and diagonal motifs that appear and recede according to the viewer’s position. Light, too, comes serendipitously into play, creating subtle tonal variations as conditions change. Here, the canvas becomes both support and subject, a kind of painting without paint that, through the ancient process of weaving, hovers between material existence and sheer perception.
