Catalogue Note
Barnum & Bailey was an American circus which first toured in 1888, and its star attraction was Jumbo the elephant. In 1907 the Ringling Brothers, tented circus performers of growing renown, purchased the Barnum & Bailey circus. Originally they continued to tour separately until wartime staff and resource shortages necessitated that the two shows officially merged.
Another example of the present work is in the V&A Collection, London.
