carved wood handle, the blade engraved with an inscription below a coat-of-arms, the inscription reads: ‘Presented to His Worshipful The Mayor of the Borough of Brighouse Alderman Richard Kershaw on the occasion of his cutting the first sod in connection with the Intersecting Sewage Works of the Borough of Brighouse July 10 1896’, together with an oak-mounted silver-plated coat-of-arms plaque, with motto 'Orando laborando', and the initials LS (2)

Condition

spade: chip to wood handle and ornament lacking, metal ornament lackimg screws and coming away from wood handle, overall wear to spade and silver layer very much worn, some scratches to wood stem. Very decorative item. plaque: significant wear to silver plated layer.
