Catalogue Note
The first edition of Cary's translation was published by him, at his own expense, and initially received little attention. A chance meeting with Coleridge, however, prompted a flurry of interest: "the praise which Coleridge gave to Cary's Dante in a lecture early in 1818 (reinforced by a favourable article by Ugo Foscolo in the Edinburgh Review) led to the sale of 1000 copies in less than three months, and the publication of a second edition in 1819" (Oxford DNB). Blake considered Cary's translation to be "superior to all others" (John Thomas Smith, Nollekens and his Times, ed. Whitten, II, p. 393).
