Catalogue Note

Very rare third French edition of the political economist's most important book, one of the most controversial, radical, and influential works of the period. Pierre Prévost first translated Malthus' great work in 1809, basing his translation on the fourth edition of 1807. With Malthus' encouragement, however, he decided to prepare a new translation, this time with the help of his son and based on the fifth edition of 1817 which embodied substantial changes in the chapters on rent. This translation was published in Paris in 1823 and in Geneva in 1824 as the 'deuxième édition française.'
