Catalogue Note
Rare first edition of the first Gothic novel. The Castle of Otranto first appeared as the translation of a sixteenth-century Italian book "found in the library of an ancient Catholic family in the north of England" ("The translator's preface"); the novel's reception was so positive that Walpole published a second edition six months later in his own name.
