Catalogue Note
First edition, in the original parts, of Thackeray's great novel.
"The first numbers of Vanity Fair were comparatively unsuccessful, but its popularity increased rapidly, and before the last parts appeared Thackeray's position as one of the foremost English novelists was assured. Before half of it had been published, Mrs Carlyle wrote to her husband: "He beats Dickens out of the world" (Grolier Club, Catalogue of an exhibition commemorating... William Makepeace Thackeray).
