Catalogue Note
"He [Otero] rented a new studio, and in order to clear it empty he decided to demolish the furniture. It was while doing so that he suddenly discovered the possibilities in the fragments that lay around him. This is the beginning of the reliefs and collages. One could say that this is where Otero ends his apprenticeship and enters life; but I think it would be truer to say that this is where life fully enters him. His relationship with the world ceased to be one of striving to accomplish, and becomes one of pure receptivity. And in the minute lineaments of everyday objects accidentally presented to him, he begins to discover the most perfect clarity and equilibrium." -Jonathan Bell, London 1966
