Catalogue Note
This painting by Arturo Michelena is a true discovery. Michelena was recommended by his mentor, J.P. Laurens, to work on an illustrated version of Victor Hugo´s theater play, Hernani. The book was published by Librairie Conquet, Paris, in 1890. Michelena worked on 15 drawings for the book, 5 illustrations and 10 vignettes. The present work, recently resurfaced in France, is the only known painting related to this commission. It refers to Act Three, Scene 3, in which Don Ruiz Gómez, on the day of his wedding to Doña Sol, protects his rival Hernani (a bandit) following strict hospitality rules. Hernani would also be the only book illustrated by the Venezuelan Academic master. Based on Victor Hugo´s famous work, Giuseppe Verdi would later compose the opera Ernani in 1844, his first big popular success.
