Condition

This painting on canvas has been lined, but not recently. The paint layer is stable, and the texture is unaffected by the lining. The paint layer is unvarnished and clean. There may be an area of retouching in the upper center in the sky that has slightly discolored. The rest of the picture has remained impressively unchanged since it was painted. It is unusual to find a work by this artist that has not become acidified or browner over time. Not only is there no visible acidification of the canvas or paint layer here, but the paint itself is unabraded, clean and not varnished – as it should be. Under ultraviolet light some of the heaviest applications of paint in the sky read darker than others. The paint layer seems to be mostly original. However, there have possibly been later applications of paint in the upper left, in the lower right of the sky and around the trees in the lower left. This artist tends to paint in a very unstable and frail fashion, but this particular picture is in very healthy state.
