Catalogue Note
Mané-Katz was born to a Jewish Orthdox family in the Ukraine in 1894. He studied art from an early age attending both the School of Fine Arts in Kiev and the École des Beaux Arts in Paris. While in Paris, he became close with Pablo Picasso and other prominent artists, and was associated with the École de Paris movement, a group of Jewish artists, primarily from Eastern Europe, who settled in Paris between the wars and whose style incorporated Expressionism and Fauvism. The subjects of his works throughout his life were derived from scenes of Jewish life, such as the Jewish wedding seen here. He imbued his subjects with the bold colors and expressive brushstrokes that defined the movement.
