Catalogue Note

This picchavai of Shrinathji shows him being adored by his devotees on the annual autumn moon festival called sharadpurnima. Specially commissioned for the occasion, the painting commemorates the Rasalila, or divine dance performed by Krishna and the gopis under the silvery moon. Krishna as Shrinath ji is standing under a domed shrine with the moon above, flanked by gopis on either side. In the backdrop is a lush forest with mango trees laden with ripe fruits. Monkeys, parrots and peacocks animatedly participate in the festivities. Pictured in the sky above are the Gods with their consorts in chariots, their gestures denoting both veneration and blessings. Twenty eight square registers frame the main scene, showing the adoration of Shrinath ji  at his main haveli or shrine at Nathdwara.
Another painting depicting the same theme is in the collection of the National Gallery of Australia. (Accession No: NGA 2008.88)
