Catalogue Note
Shiva and Parvati are seated on a cheetah skin mat; the warmth of the log fire in front of them resonates with the dusk sky rendered in a rich golden hue. Interestingly they are depicted as a young couple. Shiva has the body of an agile yogi, matted hair falling over his shoulders, his body marked with tilaks and sparse jewelry. His third eye is shown on his forehead. Parvati is shown as a shy young maiden. She coyly glances at Shiva as she pours bhangi¸known as the elixir of life, into his bowl. A serpent coiled around the God’s neck extends its body to partake from the offering. The scene is set in an oval cartouche with the adjacent spandrels decorated with delicate foliate vines.
