Catalogue Note
In this scene from the Sundarkanda section of the Ramayana, Hanuman is in the city of Lanka, identified by its walls of gold. Hanuman fights off one of the many attackers he confronts on his journey to rescue Sita, who is shown watching the scene from a terraced pavilion at upper left. The smaller image of Hanuman in the foreground probably alludes to the magnanimous body proportions he is known to have taken to fight his enemies- a prevalent theme of the text. Rama and Lakshmana are depicted in a manner peculiar to the style of Datia, young boys with top knots, in simple garments and select ornaments.
