Catalogue Note
The illustration depicts the story of the sage King Muchukunda which is related in the tenth chapter of the Bhagavata Purana.
According to legend, the powerful warrior king Kalayavana challenged Krishna to a duel. Krishna lured him into a cave where one of his ardent devotees Muchukunda had been practicing penance for years. Unable to see clearly in the dark, Kalayavana attacked the sleeping Muchukunda. As the sage slowly opened his eyes and cast his gaze upon his aggressor, Kalayavana was instantly burned to death and Muchukunda was rewarded with the blessings of Krishna, the subject of his devotion.
For another illustration from the same series, see Sotheby's New York, March 22, 2007, lot 147. The stylized treatment of the dense forest with rocky outcrops inhabited by wild animals seen in the present lot, is very similar to the former painting.
