  • GARE DU LUXEMBOURG DANS LA BRUME DU MATIN
  • signed H. Ottmann and dated 02 (lower left)
  • oil on canvas
  • 48.5 by 69cm., 19 1/8 by 27 1/8 in.

Exhibited

Brussels, Dixième Salon de la Libre Esthétique, 1903, no. 275 (titled Gare du Luxembourg, Brouillard)

Condition

The canvas is not lined. UV examination reveals some scattered thin lines and tiny spots of retouching throughout the composition, most prominently towards the upper left corner, and a 10cm-long intermittent vertical line of retouching to the lower right corner. There are some fine lines of craquelure, which appear to be stable, with some tiny associated paint losses in places. Otherwise, this work is in overall fairly good condition. Colours: Overall fairly accurate in the printed catalogue, though the pinks are more prominent in the original.

Catalogue Note

Influenced by the French Impressionists, Ottmann infuses the present work with soft tones reminiscent of Renoir’s palette in a dynamic and modern composition. Gare du Luxembourg dans la brume du matin is one of the three version depicting this station under different weather conditions (wind, frost, fog), one of which is at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris. All three were exhibited at the Salon de la Libre Esthétique in Brussels in 1903.
