Condition

The canvas has been relined. Ultraviolet light reveals strokes of retouching along the left edge of the composition, and scattered minor spots, primarily in the lower fringes of the foliage above the water's edges, and parallel to the lower edge. There are some fine lines of craquelure along the lower edge. Overall this work is in good condition, and is ready to hang. Held in a decorative gilt frame with a nameplate. The colours are richer and cleaner than in the catalogue illustration, and the greens more vibrant.

Catalogue Note

Depicting a fisherman shaded by willow trees in a verdant summer landscape, La Pêche sous les saules is a prime example of Corot's mature œuvre. The work exemplifies the lyricism of Corot's landscapes during the 1850s and 60s with its sinuous tree trunks, distinctive feathered brushstrokes, and rich, lively palette, while the subject, unlike those peopled by nymphs and mythological figures in the early 1850s and before, is emphatically taken from modern life.

Corot is widely regarded as the bridge between classical traditions of French landscape painting and the modern tenets of Impressionism. As stated in the catalogue to the 1996 Corot retrospective, 'artists from Delacroix to Courbet to Renoir to Picasso, who knew Corot's work well, stubbornly held it in the highest possible regard' (Corot (exhibition catalogue), Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1996, p. xv).
