Condition

Printed on a cream sheet of wove paper, folded at the upper and lower edges. A good impression with even plate tone. The upper and lower edges are deckled. There are a few scattered foxing marks, mostly to the right of the sitter's head and a few in the margins. There is some discolouration to the extreme right edge of the sheet and a crease to the upper left corner of the margin. Otherwise, this work is in overall good condition. Colours: fairly accurate in the printed catalogue, though the papertone is overall less red in the original.

Catalogue Note

In this fine portrait of Cézanne, Pissarro renders hommage to their mutual friendship and admiration. This work relates directly to Pissarro's portrait of Cézanne painted circa 1874 (see: L.-R. Pissarro & L. Venturi, Camille Pissarro, son art, son œuvre, Paris, 1939, vol. I, no. 293). It was purchased from Lucien Pissarro, son of Camille, by John Rewald, the leading historian on Impressionnism. Rewald wrote the Cézanne Catalogue raisonné as well as being a specialist in the works of Camille Pissarro.
