Condition
Very finely carved ivory in very good condtion overall. Minor surface dirt in the crevisses which can be easily removed. a few fine hairline fissures in the background and to the edges of the ivory panel, due to exposure of humidity.Two fine drilling holes to both lower edges. Fingertip of Christ's proper right thumb may be missing. Lower silver hinge loose (but preserved). Photograph too dark in the catalogue. Ivory diptych of good quality, exceptionnally carved.

Catalogue Note
Chaque scène s’inscrit sous trois arcs trilobés aux écoinçons ornés de trèfles ajourés et surmontés de gables aux crochets feuillus. Le feuillet gauche, figurant la Vierge à l’Enfant entourée de Saint Jean-Baptiste et de Saint Jean l’Evangéliste, présente de grandes similitudes, à la fois stylistique et iconographique, avec le volet conservé à Genève (inv. no 12260), présenté comme Ile-de-France, vers 1350-1375. Le feuillet droit, composé de la Crucifixion avec la Vierge et Saint Jean, s’inscrit dans un héritage iconographique du premier tiers du XIVe siècle et se rapproche notamment d’un volet de diptyque conservé au musée du Louvre (inv. no OA 2758).
