Catalogue Note
Very few biographical details are available concerning Pierre-Innocent Zurich. He was apprenticed on 11 January 1769 to Jean-Charles Bailly who seems to have enjoyed quite a chequered career. Bailly had become master himself only days earlier on 24 December 1768 and by June 1770 was declared absent by the guards. Whether he had left Paris definitively is moot but his separation from his wife was announced in 1777 and by 1781 he was reported as living 'en province'. It must be presumed that Zurich was obliged to transfer his apprenticeship to another master and in 1780, he was sponsored for mastership by the prestigious boxmaker Pierre Mathis de Beaulieu. He is subsequently recorded as working on the quai des Orfèvres until 1783 and then quai des Horloges until 1793. A number of his gold boxes, in similar style to the present example, are recorded.
