Condition
Illustration is accurate. Very few dents, scratches and shrinkage cracks due to age.
Slight lifts to the brass marquetry on the central panel.
One patched restoration to the veneer on the right lower corner of the right panel.
Giltbronze mounts slightly tarnished and rubbed, especially the lower friezes and ornaments.
Elegant piece of furniture in general good condition.

Catalogue Note
BÉFORT, MATHIEU (1813-1880) (dit Béfort Jeune) estampillait ‘Béfort Jeune’et son atelier se trouvait aux 1 et 6 rue Neuve-Saint-Gilles à Paris de 1844 à 1880. Il était le fils de Jean-Baptiste Béfort (1783-1840) qui était d’origine belge et qui était connu pour avoir livré du mobilier pour les appartements du duc d’Orléans. Son frère aîné Bernard Béfort était actif de 1836 à 1858, date à laquelle Mathieu reprit l’atelier jusqu’en 1878. Reconnu pour ses talents d’ébéniste-marqueteur, il se spécialisa dans les meubles en marqueterie Boulle de la plus grande qualité. Joseph-Emmanuel Zwiener racheta l’atelier Béfort vers 1880.
