Condition

The bust is in very good condition overall with some very minor chips at several places, consistent with age and handling. The surface of the terracotta appears to have been cleaned. Very appealing model, one of Carpeaux' preferred subjects, portrait of his wife.

Catalogue Note

Carpeaux réalisa ce modèle en hommage à sa fiancée, Amélie de Montfort, qu'il épousera en 1869. Ce buste a été édité à partir de 1874 et existe dans plusieurs variantes. Une terre cuite du même modèle est conservée au musée du Petit Palais (PPS DUT 1614). Une autre figurait dans la vente de la collection Fabius Frères (Sotheby’s Paris, 26 octobre 2011, lot 132).
