Cole Porter (1891-1964) was one of the major American composers and songwriters for the Broadway musical stage. In 1917, when the United States entered World War I, Porter moved to Paris to work with the Duryea Relief organization. He lived in a luxurious apartment givong lavish, extravagant, and what were considered somewhat scandalous, parties. The following year, he met Linda Lee Thomas, whom he married in December1919 remaining genuinely devoted until her death in 1954. They lived together in Paris, rue Monsieur, near les Invalides and in a rented palazzo in Venice. The couple were enthusiastic admirers of Cartier's creations, especially Linda, considered as one of the most beautiful and stylish woman of the age. She would give Cole a Cartier box for the First Night of each new musical.
After a serious riding accident in 1937, Porter lost the use of his legs. He christened them Joe and Geraldine and ironically organised another of his celebrated parties in their honour. Linda died in 1954 and Cole lived cloistered in a flat in New York, suffering extreme pain, He died alone in 1964.
