Condition

With scattered age and construction cracks, dents and abrasions. Gesso with scattered cracks, chips and losses. Gilding and paint refreshed and now with losses, rubbing and surface dirt. Very minor old worm damage to underside.

Catalogue Note

These fauteuils belong to a group of seat furniture supplied by Brion to the imperial garde meuble. A pair of chairs from the same suite with corresponding inventory numbers was sold Sotheby's New York, June 3, 2008, lot 193, whereas a pair of fauteuils, also with with matching inventory numbers, was sold Sotheby's New York, October 27, 1990, lot 107. A fauteuil (one of a pair) from this set, but lacking its cresting, formerly with Didier Aaron, Paris, is illustrated Christophe Huchet de Quenetain, Le Styles Consulat et Empire, Paris, 2005, p. 100, fig. 69.
