Catalogue Note

The present secrétaire owes its overall concept to the secrétaire à abattant popularized in Paris.  The arrangement of the various elements is, however, typical of the work which was executed in Moscow and Saint Petersburg at the turn of the eighteenth century.  A comparable example in Karelian birch is illustrated, Antoine Chenevière, Russian Furniture, The Golden Age 1780-1840, New York, 1988, p. 128, fig. 115.
