Condition

Top probably later and with chips, abrasions and restored break. Scattered age and construction cracks and some restorations to veneer. Vernis Martin with scattered cracks, some flaking, losses and old restorations; recommend stabilizing in areas. Deep dents to Vernis Martin around drawer pulls. Keyplates possibly later. Ormolu with oxidation, rubbing and surface dirt.

Catalogue Note

By utilizing natural wood in combination with the Vernis Martin technique, this commode emulates similar pieces in which woods were combined with costly Chinese or Japanese lacquer panels in a highly distinctive and fashionable manner. These commodes are characteristic of the production of marchands merciers such as Hennebert and Charles Darnault. The inventory prepared after the death of the marquise O'Heilly in 1731 includes such commode: "une commode de bois verni de la Chine placqué et bois de violette..."
