Catalogue Note
Artist's inscription:
An autumn scene all along the clear river: a shallow bank interspersed with blossoming reed-grass.
I intend to represent returning wild geese, but someone calls them ducks.
I learnt painting without proper instruction. When I paint wild geese, they look instead like ducks. The insults and abuses are no surprise! Am I to fly amongst swans, or am I to fight for food with chickens and ducks? Alas, my entire life has been foretold in my painting. Seventh month of the renzi year of the Yongzheng reign (1732), Bian Shoumin.
