the bulbous body with a long cylindrical handle surmounted by a bulging knop, finely painted around the sides with a five-clawed iron-red dragon writhing among multi-coloured clouds, all detailed with gilt outlines and reserved on the white ground, the handle mounted with a wisp of white hair, the terminal inscribed in iron red with a six-character seal mark

A closely related brush in the Shanghai Museum, Shanghai, is illustrated in Sekai tōji zenshū/Ceramic Art of the World, vol. 21, Kyoto, 1981, pl. 124; a pair was sold twice in these rooms, 15th May 1989, lot 317, and again, 5th November 1997, lot 1549; and another pair was also sold in these rooms, 22nd May 1984, lot 148.
